ABSTRACT GLASS ART DESCRIPTIONS

Glorious Day

“Glorious Day”
Kiln-Fired Decorative Glass Art Bowl – (for decoration only – not functional)

Dimensions: 14.50” W x 1.25 “ Deep
Black, iridescent clear, and and brightly colored Dichroic glass (including purple, orange, red, yellow, turquoise and gold splatter pattern, and orange and black splatter pattern) were layered on top of each other in an eye-catching way. There is a soft-edged separation between some of the clear and the black glass that adds to the interest of the design. Some of the pieces of the dichroic and black glass are not quite fully fused into the base of clear and black, so they remain a bit raised above the base surface to provide even more character to the art glass. The piece is opaque with smaller areas of translucent glass and a shiny finish on the front surface.

Description of construction technique: Black and clear glass were cut into the shape of a circle. Pieces of dichroic glass were cut, placed next to each other and on top of each other on the surface of this black and clear base. They were kiln-fired or “fused” (melted together) in multiple firings. The circle was then melted or “slumped” into a mold that gave it the shape of a shallow bowl.

Display Stand # 4 displays it well, and is available – sold and shipped separately.

Feeling Alive

“Feeling Alive”
Kiln-Fired Stand Displayed Glass Art

Dimensions: 16” W x 9.75” H x .375” D
Abstract Color Composition designed to capture the colors of a brilliant sunset sky. The edges of the glass have been left in the irregular shape that the firing yielded. Best displayed with light behind it. The piece is translucent with some opaque designs and a shiny finish on the front surface.

Description of construction technique: Pieces of glass cut into specific organic shapes and frit (ground glass) were layered onto a sheet of glass that was fired at an angle in the kiln. That allowed the pieces and frit to slide down during firing to create a more fluid melting of the colors. A second firing added black enamel lines, frit, and strings of glass (“stringer”) on the surface of the glass to add more design and textural interest.

“Electric Blue”
Kiln-Fired Dichroic Glass Art Wall Hanging

Dimensions: 29.5” W x 23” H x .375” D
Wall panel composed of transparent blue and clear iridescent glass and brightly colored dichroic glass. All the dichroic is fused on top of the transparent blue and the clear iridescent in firings that leave the surface of the dichroic somewhat raised in relief, and with the textures of the ripple and bubbled glass inviting to the touch. The piece is translucent with smaller areas of opaque glass, has a shiny finish on the front surface, and the ripple glass is textured.

Description of construction technique: Large pieces of iridescent transparent blue and clear were cut for the base. Smaller pieces of dichroic were cut and fired onto the surface of the blue and clear base, some of the dichroic overlapping other dichroic.

Shattered Sky

“Shattered Sky”
Kiln-Fired Glass Art Wall Hanging

Dimensions: 21.5” W x 19” H x .125″ D
Wall panel composed of white, dark blue and light blue iridescent glass, and blue streaky glass. The piece is opaque with smaller areas of translucent glass and a shiny finish on the front surface.

Description of construction technique: Various colors of glass were cut and layered
together in a pattern that was then intentionally subjected to thermal shock during the firing process. Heating or cooling glass too fast can produce “ thermal shock” that cracks the glass, which then can be fired again to re-fuse into a new design.

Wandering

“Wandering”
Kiln-Fired 3 Dimensional Glass Art Sculpture

Dimensions: 16.25” x 16.5” x 1.5”
Free-form organic sculpture composed entirely of “frit” (ground glass), suggestive of an octopus on the move. Glass colors include clear, royal blue, cranberry, and light lavender. The piece is translucent with some opaque design and a shiny finish on the top surface.

Description of construction technique: Frit (ground glass) of the various colors was mounded together into a multi tendril-like design and fused (fired). This process was repeated with the addition of more frit to assure that all areas of the glass would be substantially thick and sturdy. On a separate firing, the now unified glass piece was placed on a mold and fired again to a lower temperature (“slumped”) to give it a three-dimensional undulating form.
